In this episode of Raise More from the Right Funders I share the journey that led to the creation of the Power Partners Formula, a transformative approach to fundraising that I pioneered. I began as an accidental fundraiser who truly disliked the process, yet I discovered a more fulfilling path through building power partnerships – an innovative concept that diverges from the traditional understanding of fundraising. Inspired by my training in executive coaching, habit and behavior design, and design thinking, I revolutionized my approach and saw incredible results, successfully raising funds for an organization from one million to 3.8 million, all while growing to love fundraising.

.

In this episode, I delve into the reasons why integrating executive coaching tools in fundraising is a vital strategy. I explore our inner barriers that often hinder our actions and discuss the different styles of fundraising energies. I understand that fundraising is a deeply personal and vulnerable process, frequently triggering our nervous systems. By integrating executive coaching tools, understanding various fundraising styles, and practicing awareness and choice, I believe we can tackle the challenges of fundraising more effectively. I emphasize that even in those tough moments, we all have the power to shift our narratives and energy.

.

In this episode, I explore the profound influence of Dr. BJ Fogg’s behavior model, consisting of motivation, ability, and prompts, on my fundraising career and personal behavior as a fundraiser. By understanding these elements, I was able to debunk myths about donor motivations and implement a more strategic approach to prompt donations, drastically enhancing donor experiences. Additionally, acknowledging the vulnerability in fundraising tasks, I emphasize the importance of fostering hope while reducing fear, and suggest adopting ‘tiny habits’—a concept from Fogg’s model—to break daunting tasks into manageable steps. We also explore ways to overcome resistance in fundraising, highlighting that donor behavior mirrors fundraiser behavior and addressing fear can significantly boost donor engagement. I hope this episode, as enlightening to create as it will be for you to hear, proves beneficial for you.

.

In this episode, I discuss how nonprofits can identify their most accessible fundraising opportunities, dispelling the notion that every organization is suitable for every type of funding. Drawing from my experiences as a fundraising consultant and leader of a niche organization, I underscore the importance of understanding your operational focus and development stage to identify suitable funding avenues. I introduce “funder mapping,” a tool used in my Power Partners formula, to identify potential funders based on your unique organizational assets, and “asset mapping,” which helps identify what your organization can offer to various funders. By understanding the perspectives of foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors, you can strategically approach fundraising, fostering more fruitful relationships. For further guidance, our Power Partners formula is always available.

.

In this episode, I introduce asset mapping—a revolutionary tool that reframes fundraising by leveraging your organization’s inherent value, addressing the prevalent struggle between scarcity and abundance mindsets. I explore how asset mapping helps establish stronger connections with various funders by categorizing your organization’s assets in line with what appeals to foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors. This leads to more targeted and effective communication and outreach strategies. The concept of a ‘funder map’ is shared, enabling alignment of your organization’s unique assets with different funders’ interests, thereby enhancing your ability to capitalize on your organization’s strengths.

.

In this episode, I explore the transition from a money-first fundraising approach to alignment-first fundraising, a cornerstone of the Power Partners Formula. I discuss how a fixation on financial resources can overshadow mission alignment, resulting in power imbalances and less-than-optimal decisions. By shifting focus from ‘who has the money’ to ‘where is the mission, value, and purpose alignment?’ fundraising becomes a vehicle for promoting purpose over profit. I delve into my transformation journey through alignment-first fundraising, highlighting the significance of synergy with aligned funders and how it fosters shared-vision relationships. Stressing that mission-aligned funds yield better results than those with strings attached, I advocate for a cooperative rather than relentless approach, thereby enhancing impact.

.

In this episode, Ben Houghton, Executive Director of Broadway for Arts Education, discusses his experience with the Power Partners Formula™ Collective, focusing on its positive impact on his organization’s growth and fundraising endeavors. Reflecting on the program’s benefits, he underscores the wisdom he gleaned from the community, the value of advice during coaching calls, and the program’s flexible structure, which caters to individual needs and timelines. Ben is excited about his organization’s transformation, from a $200,000 entity to one raising nearly a million dollars, and expresses his pride in this accomplishment. The episode wraps up with the host applauding Ben’s work and urging listeners to discover his organization’s innovative and inclusive approach to fundraising and community engagement.

.

In this episode, I interview Hillary Wolken from the Institute for Sustainable Communities, discussing the transformative influence of the Power Partners program on her fundraising approach and mental well-being. Hillary highlights the shift from a scarcity mindset to establishing authentic connections with donors, profoundly affecting her fundraising results. She delves into common fundraising challenges, such as target pressures and anxiety, and how the program aided her in overcoming these issues through a supportive community and group coaching. We explore the fundamental role of fundraising in nurturing relationships and advocates for organizations, stressing introspection and confronting fears for personal growth. Despite demanding effort and practice, Power Partners offers a transformative, long-term approach that transcends temporary solutions. Hillary ends by expressing her appreciation for the program’s community, fostering connection, support, and growth among fundraisers.

The #1 mistake nonprofits make that causes them to get ghosted by a potential funder...

The #1 mistake nonprofits make is sending the same outreach email to an individual as they would a foundation or corporate partner. Don’t worry, I did this too for many years.

But the truth is, every single outreach email needs to be customized, not just by changing the name of the person and a few other sentences, the entire format, focus, and alignment of the email should be completely different based on the:

  • Type of funder
  • Area of alignment
  • Specific research on that funder

We take a really deep dive into this inside the Power Partners Formula™  in Phase 3 (the Effective Engagement Roadmap) but just to give you a little inside peak, here’s an example template email that demonstrates how these 3 components are interwoven in a powerful and effective cold outreach email.
